What is PADI

I am sure that you have heard the word PADI before, especially because you are actually reading a blog on a scuba diving website right now. But do you know what or who PADI are?

PADI – The Professional Association of Diving Instructors is a scuba diving membership and training organisation that is now recognised worldwide.
According to Wikipedia as of March 2017 PADI is reported to have issued 25 million certifications, and if you look at the PADI website it states that “Over 27 million Divers started here.”
In fact PADI’s motto is “The Way the World Learns to Dive.”

PADI is over 50 years old, dreamed up in 1966 by two scuba instructors who were friends in the state of Illinois, U.S.A.

“John Cronin, a scuba equipment salesman for U.S. Divers, and Ralph Erickson, an educator, university water polo coach, champion swimmer, lifeguard and waterman were concerned about the scuba diving industry.
They felt that the scuba certification agencies that existed at the time could be improved as they didn’t use state-of-the-art instruction, and made it unnecessarily difficult for people to enter the sport. John and Ralph knew there had to be a better way to support diving instructors and for people to learn to breathe underwater.” – padi.com

Here at Qld Scuba Diving Company we have worked very closely with PADI over the years. Our introductory scuba dive and all our scuba diving courses all follow PADI guidelines.
All of our instructors are PADI certified and we are very proud to say that we have been awarded a PADI 5 star dive centre accreditation.

“PADI Five Star Dive Centers are progressive dive shops that provide a full range of PADI scuba diving education programs, equipment selection and experience opportunities, while encouraging aquatic environmental responsibility.
These businesses excel in providing quality services to divers, present a professional image and actively promote the benefits of recreational scuba diving, snorkeling, dive travel, and environmental protection.
PADI Five Star Dive Centers embrace the PADI System of diver education and offer regular continuing education programs to ensure divers have the opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge. These dive businesses are active in the community and are committed to providing customer satisfaction along with great dive experiences.” – padi.com
