Gold Coast Schoolies 2019

What is a Schoolie?

For those of you that have absolutely no idea what a Schoolie is let me educate you (pardon the pun). In Australia when you finish your last year at school and have completed all of your exams it’s time to celebrate. It has become a tradition, almost a right of passage to gather a group of you and embark on a week or two holiday. This holiday normally involves a lot of drinking, dancing and having fun knowing that school isn’t just out for summer but it’s finally over for good.

Where do Schoolies go to celebrate?

There are many locations that Australian School leavers tend to choose for their end of school celebrations. The Sunshine Coast, Airlie Beach, Torquay, Rottnest Island, even Bali, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The most popular destination without a doubt is here on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Every year tens of thousands of Australian school leavers flock to Surfers Paradise to enjoy the party nightlife, golden beaches and the many activities like Scuba Diving, Jet Boating, Aquaduck or Theme Parks.

More info about Gold Coast Schoolies

Gold Coast Schoolies started in the 70’s with just the single-sex private school pupils meeting at the Broadbeach hotel. The event became organised in 1980 and has grown bigger each year since.

While tens of thousands of school leavers are partying and having fun this leaves many parents at home worried sick for the safety of their children. Despite the news coverage Gold Coast Schoolies is generally a safe place without any major incidents. The Gold Coast city council ensures that extra police and ambulance staff are on the ground in the heart of Surfers Paradise. Plus every year the fantastic Red Frog Organisation has over 1500 volunteers walking the streets helping to keep all our young people safe.

The number of Gold Coast Schoolies is estimated to be over 50,000 each year and they boost the local economy by about $60million.
